I am adding a feature to our web site that will include profiles and photos of some of the people who practice at our studio and I am looking for volunteers. Each profile will include a very brief description (it will be up to you how much you want to say about yourself), answers to a couple of simple questions about Bikram Yoga and a photograph of you in a posture of your choosing.
I want to feature a diverse range of students — the more shapes, colors and sizes the better. Don’t be shy about having your photo taken in a posture — I will work with you to choose a couple postures to photograph and you can choose which photo we will use in your profile. I’m very excited about this and won’t have any difficulty singling some of you out for inclusion but I’m hoping several of you will jump right in and volunteer to be featured. I’d like to get started right away.

Due to popular request we are instigating another Bikram Yoga Challenge. Can you make a short, intense commitment to supercharge your body, mind and life? The benefits of Bikram Yoga accumulate exponentially — the more regularly you practice, the more profound the benefits will be. Don’t believe it? Prove it to yourself by accepting the challenge and we’ll reward you with a bonus prize. Here’s how it works…
Attend 30 classes in 35 days and receive a free 5 Class Card.
Attend 30 classes in 30 days and receive a free 1 Month Unlimited Class Card.
Start any time between June 1 and June 14. From that day on come every day for 30 days or 6 days a week for 5 weeks. If you miss a day you can make it up by taking two classes in one day but you can only do that twice during the challenge. The benefits of a challenge come from a consistent practice more than how many classes you take.
If you already have a class card you can get started right away. If not, you can buy a special 35 day pass for the same price as our regular 1 Month (30 day) card on the first day of your challenge.
There will be a sign up sheet at the front desk sometime this weekend.

If I were pessimistic about the future I’d be worried that hot yoga isn’t a sustainable business and probably will become a luxury we can’t afford as a global energy crisis approaches. Yoga, of course, will never go out of style or be impractical, but heating the studio to 105 degrees may some day be cost prohibitive. I’ve done what I can to maximize our energy efficiency (using radiant heat, installing double pane windows in the studio, insulating the walls and ceilings, converting to compact fluorescents (in progress) and installing timers on many of our electrical appliances) but the truth is that ours is a business model that uses more than it’s fair share of energy.
I’ve tried the Bikram series without the heat and it’s just not the same. I also believe that the profound benefits derived by so many people makes it worth the expenditures so I have decided to join the carbon offset bandwagon. I know carbon offsets aren’t a perfect solution and we need to continue to look for more ways to create energy and minimize our use of it but there aren’t any perfect solutions and this is a concrete step I can undertake now.
I have just purchased one year’s worth of carbon offsets from NativeEnergy, an organization that is working to find “clean and renewable energy sources that reduce pollution and create sustainable economies for Native Americans, family farmers and local communities.”

Whenever a major natural disaster strikes anywhere on the globe everyone’s thoughts and prayers go to the victims and survivors. If your impulse is to do something more and you don’t have the means to travel or the time to volunteer then you can always, like BYD, send money. A little research has led me to believe that the organization best equipped, financially, politically and logistically, to quickly and efficiently get aid to remote and difficult to reach locations is Americares. While the news media are full of articles about the difficulties of sending aid to Burma/Myanmar imposed by the ruling military junta Americares already has partners in the region and people and supplies on the way. This is the first organization I look to when wanting to donate to any global humanitarian crisis.
